The Problem
Where I live there is a lack of creative outlets for children. Many of the kids in my area lack confidence, something I believe every child needs most. Many feel lost and unsure of who they are. There is a great deal of bullying and these children, in their anger, resort to violent and self-destructive behavior.
Plan of Action
My drama program if for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders who are interested in theater and making friends. By teaching them simple acting skills and bonding together over a three month period, my cast is able to come out of it understanding theater better, but more importantly they have more confidence, a better sense of self, and possibly even a passion they take with them for the rest of their lives. With the help of a legitimate set, gorgeous costumes, and the glow of the houselights, not to mention the relationship between every member involved, the children walk away with a sense of accomplishment. They have completed something spectacular together and they feel that stage magic that only an actor can understand.
