The Problem

Poverty is a serious problem that afflicts hundreds, if not thousands, of people in the city of Lancaster, PA and the surrounding region. Even more unfortunate, families with children are vulnerable to the vicious cycle of poverty. To help people work their way out of subsistance and impoverishment, it is important that these families recieve a little bit extra from society. Any spare time that they recieve can help them improve their economic situtation. Therefore, we designed a program that works with families moving out of poverty to care for their children for two hours once or twice a week and give them extra time.

Plan of Action

F&M Childcare, an official club at Franklin & Marshall College, provides transportation for student volunteers to spend a few hours each week at a local transitional housing complex. Parents drop their kids off and for the next two hours, we entertain the children with games, puzzles, art, books, and other contructive activities. The impacts we have made are not only on the children but also on the parents. When the parents return to pick-up their children, their kindness and gratitude amaze us. It's wonderful to know that our efforts not only make the kids feel great, but help the parents too.
