The Problem

We are interested in holding monthly penny/spare change drives to help various charities.

Plan of Action

1. Talk with local supermarket and see if we can't have signs and a collection box inside the store 2. check with other charities to see if they need supplies for similar projects (supplies drive instead of pennies) 3. Collect money/supplies using box/jar in library lobby (make signs) 4. Count and deposit money/supplies at designated charity

Project Updates

In Feb/March 2011 we ran a spare change drive by placing a collection jar at the front desk of the library; the teens decided that the money for this month would go to Heifer International (heifer.org) and other change drives could be easily conducted for other charities in future months. Teens created their own signage explaining what the donations would go towards ($20 in donations can buy a flock of chicks for a 3rd world family). It's difficult to say how many people were helped in the end, or how many people ended up contributing to the jar, but we ended up collecting $10.41 (it would have been more, but in the wake of the Japan quake/tsunami we decided to start a new collection for Japan). The $10.41 collected was donated via the website by the TAB's adult/youth coordinator and a confirmation/thank you sign posted inside the library.
