The Problem

"For the Love of a Mother's Child is an independent, philanthropic organization dedicated to helping homeless mothers and their children build better lives by providing housing, guidance, support, and supplying parenting and vocational training to mothers, all of which will promote family unity, autonomy, and the development of self-awareness and self-responsibility. This assistance will lift generations out of poverty and afford them a better quality of life, empowering them emotionally, academically, and spiritually while enabling them to locate and maintain permanent housing self-sufficiently."

Why It's Important

My organization addresses the community problem of homelessness and its logical adverse effects and byproducts at the individual, family, and community levels, specifically in Austin, Texas.

We are dedicated to helping homeless mothers and their children build better lives by providing housing, guidance, support, and supplying parenting and vocational training to mothers, all of which will promote family unity, autonomy, and the development of self-awareness and self-responsibility. This assistance will lift generations out of poverty and afford them a better quality of life, empowering them emotionally, academically, and spiritually while enabling them to locate and maintain permanent housing self-sufficiently.

The Plan Of Action

I decided to lead the official formation of a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing housing and support services for homeless individuals in our city. Soon thereafter, I set out and conducted thorough research regarding nonprofit organizations, bylaws, structures, tax-exempt/IRS paperwork, etc. Through this process I often consulted with others as well as the other individuals involved in this project until I felt I had an adequate understanding of the goals, organization, functions and aspirations of the organization as well as an understanding and means in order to take the proper course of action.

After, I arduously set out and working through much strife, completed the mission statement, business plan, articles of incorporation, and bylaws. We began to locate and interview candidates for the Board of Directors for purposes of this philanthropic organization, which is now called “For the Love of a Mother’s Child.” This has been a problem in and of itself because the organization is a start-up and people tend to have reservations in investing their time, money, and efforts in such endeavors. This problem has been solved by conveying the gravity of homelessness in the Austin area as well as the goals and benefits of the organization. Thankfully, we located and interviewed a host of likeminded individuals.

Currently, For the Love of a Mother’s Child has assisted about 20 homeless individuals and I am now a member of the Board currently in charge of handling volunteers interested in providing their services for the organization. This organization has connected individuals from seemingly every walk of life for a greater purpose of assisting, less fortunate individuals and families. The community in which I grew up in has and is as a whole surely benefited from the creation of this organization and many lives have markedly been altered for the better, and not just those of the homeless individuals who so dearly need our assistance, but the volunteers, the staff members, and community members in a broad sense.

The organization has a problem with self-sufficiency and consistent funding. Securing 501(c)(3) status would certainly open the door for myriad funding opportunities and make individuals and corporations more likely to donate funds.

Project Updates

Update: I recently was awarded a Plum Grant by Do Something and with these funds I have been able to propel For the Love of a Mother's Child to the next level. The organization just completed its first organizational board of directors meetings and we are making the final preparations to file for 501c3 status, which is the expressed purpose of the Plum Grant. This is a very exciting juncture for this organization and because of Do Something this charitable organization will be able to reach more of the homeless population at a deeper level!

Number of people in the organization: 15
Number of people impacted: 40
Describe the impact the grant had: This provided us with initial funding to apply for our certificate of formation, develop the webpage, and make purchases for fundraisers and events.
Project highlights: 1. Planning and implementing fundraisers 2. The opportunity to reach out to various individuals and charitable organizations 3. Assisting those that need it most.
How did the project unfold and develop? The project unfolded wonderfully and we were able to greatly impact the community. We were able to secure the help from a charitable legal team Texas C-Bar who referred us to a pro-bono legal team of University of Texas at Austin Law School students, and they have been a great help with this project offering great resources and skills as well as much needed legal services and advice. We have hosted many events and fundraisers and assisted many homeless mothers and their children with our services and donations.

This is so important.

Question: how do you help transition people out of the shelter? Do you do job training or anything like that?

Yes, we do offer vocational training and other lifeskills training.

What kinds of things can you train homeless people to do? Like, can they use computers? Could you train them to be manicurists or something like that?
