The Problem

My fifth grade class has identified the problem of too many plastic water bottles being wasted in our school and being thrown into the garbage contributing to the growing landfills. As a result, we would like to create a recycling program at our school, Forest Lakes Elementary School in Oldsmar, Florida that would focus specifically on the recycling, reuse, and elimination of plastic water bottles at our school.

Plan of Action

Our plan is to do the following: Call attention to the problem by developing and implementing a recycling program that makes it easy and convenient for students, families, and staff members to dispose of their plastic water bottles in a safe and appropriate manner. We would do this using morning announcements, going to classes to give speeches and share the message, and putting posters up around the school. Then we would set up recycling stations around the school to collect the bottles. We would also conduct a school-wide contest focusing on reusing the bottles to create unique and interesting art work, which we would judge and award prizes to the classes that submit winning projects. Those projects would then be displayed in our Library. We would create movies that explain how to eliminate the use of plastic water bottles and share them with our school.
