The Problem

We believe that the plight of refugees in Denan and those struggling in rural poverty in Bangladesh are the plights of those who are being wholly forgotten. Much of this is due to lack of media attention and hence, lack of awareness. In the Bangladeshi province of Pabna, there are currently only FOUR general hospitals and ONE community hospital. With a population of 2.1 million people, this means that there is one hospital per 450, 000 people. Set in the remote eastern region of Ethiopia, Denan is a small town which has been devastated by drought, instability and abject poverty.Refugee families leave their homes and possessions behind to walk for days to reach the refugee camp with no guarantee of food or safe water. The skeletal remains of animals litter the route to Denan and the desperation of the refugee families is almost tangible. The refugee families are in desperate need of food, water and medicine. Over 7000 refugee families live in dire need of our support with new arrivals flooding the camp on a daily basis.

Why It's Important

Dr. James Orbinski, founder of Medicins Sans Frontieres Canada, once said "How am I to be, how are we to be in relation to the suffering of others? In its first moment, in its sacred present, humanitarianism seeks to relieve the immediacy of suffering, and most especially of suffering alone. In our choice to be with those who suffer, compassion leads not simply to pity but to solidarity." This has been the guiding principle behind all of the work we do. We want to give voice to those who suffer in abject poverty in Denan and Bangladesh.

The Plan Of Action

We are planning a charity dinner and silent auction set for December 2009. We will strive for 100% profit by having all of the food (an international buffet!) made and donated by our family and friends. Silent auction items will be donated by club members. Many of these items have been bought at warehouse and outlet sales - providing a bargain that can be re-sold for charity. We will advertise around Queen's University and at several key locations in the community. We will also bring an academic scholar in from Toronto, who will motivate the audience to give generously by expounding upon the virtues of charity within Islam and other faiths. The speaker is willing to come to this event pro bono. The event will be held at the local mosque, but will be open to all regardless of faith. Hence, we will also advertise to interfaith groups, along with churches and synagogues. Last year, this event was a great success - we raised $11,000 and brought together people of many faiths for one common cause. Proceeds will be split evenly between the medical clinic we are building in Pabna, Bangladesh and Muslim Hands' relief efforts in Denan. This is what our budget looks like so far: Charity Dinner Utensils, Napkins, Plates, Tablecloths, Drinks --- $150 Marketing and Promotional Material and Tickets for Charity Dinner --- $100 Total: $250

How Can Others Get Involved?
