The Problem
We are building a school in Kabale Uganda, to provide education to those who need it most. The children of the Batwa in Southern Uganda lack any form of education at all. Without schooling there will be no jobs made available to them as they grow older. Many of them will wind up homeless and hungry. The Batwa have been living for generations in the dense forests of Uganda, but in recent years the government has deemed the forests to be national parks and no longer allows the Batwa to live in them. Now these people are being forced to adapt to a life they never dreamed of. Without the skills to survive outside the forests they are in danger of starvation and disease. Simple skills such as reading writing and arithmetic can help change their world.
Plan of Action
In addition to teaching math, reading and writing, we believe agriculture and gardening are important skills. Our school will have a garden, not only to provide food for the students but maybe someday to help support the local economy. We will be distributing vegetable seed to the families of our students to help everyone involved. Providing education at a young age allows the children to advance into secondary school and even college. Without this primary education most rural villagers are forced to lives of hard manual labor. It costs about $1 a day to feed and educate a student in Uganda. Our school building is scheduled for completion in February of 2012. We are excited to see this project taking off and would like to build more schools in the future.
