The Problem

Discrimination and cultural misunderstanding.

Plan of Action

Communication and being able to talk freely without words charging peoples emotions is the simplest way to combat this issue. Often our Freedom of Speech is cited to allow hurtful language that hampers discussion and opening channels of communication. Working with the Arts Council in my community we are going to create an interactive art project entitled: Freedom to Speak. The project will be an empty wall in an art gallery featuring student art that will have markers attached with students encourage to write their "fears" about other people so taboo topics can be raised, discussed and understood. The exhibit will hang for a month with new "fears" being added daily. Because people will not know the race, gender, or background of the people who wrote the fears it will allow them to read the fears and place themselves in the shoes of other people opening a door to understanding.
