The Problem

I am a senior at my high school. As I have progressed through school, I have seen the underclassmen, most specifically the freshmen, appearing very unprepared for the next phases of their life. During my junior year, my principal asked me to do a community project in my school, and he said to focus on the freshmen. He stated that about 120 freshmen out of the 600 were labeled "at risk". At risk is a label that is given to students who may have barriers in their lives. These barriers may be anything from divorce, learning disabilities, no parents, drug problems, and social issues. These barriers are believed to be significant in straying the students' focus and ultimately prohibiting the possibility of going to college. I do want the freshmen of today to have the same opportunities that I have today. I along with my group have decided to become mentors to 40 of the 120 kids, so they can be redirected on the path to go to college while gaining a rich high school experience.

Plan of Action

What I have done is I found 4 other friends who looked like quality senior mentors. We found 3 more promising mentors and made groups of 2. Once we had our group we talked to the freshman counselor who showed us the list of "at risk" kids. She talked to us about the ones who required serious attention and then those who just needed a little push and guidance. Each group selected 10 kids from the list and from then on we had our group. We had a meeting with all 40 kids and talked to them about what we are trying to do. We then met with our personal groups and decided on a day and a place that we would meet each week. Each week the mentors would decide what to do. My partner and I decided to play ice breakers the first month to get on a personal level, and then we decided to talk about strength and weaknesses with our freshman so we could evaluate would we had to focus on during the year. Now next semester we will designate certain weeks of the month for organizing of their binders and homework, doing homework, and talking about accomplishments. We have decided that on the last month of the year we will tell each and every freshman how they have changed, and ask them what they have learned. Throughout the year we will talk about college, and will remain credible as senior mentors by doing well in our classes and get acceptance letters and scholarship offers. The project is surly working because the kids continue to come, and after 3 months of implying it in our school, we are beginning to sight a positive change in our freshman.
