Katie and I came up with the idea of initiating a Bible study in the summer before my junior year. We had to meet with our principal, discuss our intentions, our meeting times, and how we would spread the word. After it was approved, we agreed to not only send out simple invitations but attend a weekend with all the freshmen on the "Freshman Retreat". This retreat was the weekend before school which introduced all the freshman to each other. Getting involved with the grade, Katie and I led events, talked with each individual student, and spent the entire weekend getting to know them. After this weekend, it was clear that more than half of the girls were interested so the next week, we begun the study. This continued throughout the year and even involved nights ice skating, going to movies and eating dinner with the girls. I knew by the end of the year, I had truly made an impact when one of the girls, Elizabeth, came up to me almost in tears with her great words of appreciation. She explained to me how she began freshman year worried, nervous and anxious, but thanks to my leadership and influence, she became a changed girl, wanting to make wise decisions, wanting to always do what was right and wanting to befriend everyone. She also told me how the verses we studied truly boosted her self confidence and created a lot less drama in her life because she no longer cared about gossiping. Seeing that she had taken a different path from most high school girls was breathtaking.
