The Problem

https://www.facebook.com/pages/edit/?id=136177823085308&sk=basic Friends of Tasajera began with a dream of two doctors and a community in need of healthcare. Salvadoran and American doctors collaborated and the dream was realized, a health clinic built using funds that were raised in Washington and Oregon. But what began as a medical project soon expanded to much more than that: now the project is helping the community to start businesses, protect the rich ecosystem of the island community, help with educational tools, develop an ecotourism business, and empower women.

Plan of Action

So far, this project has helped many of the 2,500 people who live on the island. We have accomplished many of our goals, but there have been many challenges along the way such as lack of funding, lack of resources such as medicine and volunteers, and political problems. And there are many things that we have yet to accomplish. We want to be able to provide flouride varnish for the younger members of the community in order to prevent the dental carries that are a prevalent health issue in the community. We would also like to provide health education classes to educate the community about nutrition, sexual health, and general health. We would like to provide scholarships for one or two members of the community to go to medical school so that the island could have a doctor in residence. We would like to provide funding to maintain the part of the project that saves sea turtles. These are our main goals for the future.
