The Problem

The Bellbrook Middle School was built about three years ago. They have been trying to find sports that would take up space in the empty parts of the lot. I came up with the idea to design and install a frisbee golf course on the campus so the community and students had another place to get physical exercise.

Plan of Action

I was originally the co-chair to this project until the student who was the main chair graduated from high school. The whole idea of a frisbee golf course was brought up my 8th grade year. I took over the project as a sophomore in high school, or my 10th grade year. During my sophomore year, I found out that the school district was building a new school and they needed sporting ideas. I went to the Superintendent of the school district and explained my idea. He approved of it and sent me to the middle school principal and assistant principal. They approved of the idea as well and told me to design it and go back to them with the layout. It took me almost 4 months to map out the course. I spent on average, three days a week at the open fields taking measurements and pictures. Once I mapped out the course on the blueprints, I created a digital version on microsoft paint. The next step was to install the baskets for frisbee golf. I saved a date over the summer following my sophomore year to install the course. To prepare for the installation date I had to spray paint the ground where the baskets and tee pad went. I also had to contact many people including a landscaping company. Once the date came, I had about 15 people out there to help me install everything. The landscaping company drilled the holes for the baskets. I had other students mix the concrete used to secure the baskets in the ground. I also had a few teachers and students plant some trees and flowers around the course. I had some other students install the tee pads, which were just very large cement squares. It took us two full days to get everything installed. Even after the initial installation date, there was still a large sign to install. I brought one of my best friends to help with the sign, which was 6ft long by 4ft tall. My friend and I cemented 3 wood posts into the ground. We then came back the next day to drill the large sign to the wood posts. After all the physical parts of the course were in, I decided to design a scorecard. I designed the scorecard and sent it to the printer's to get printed. They made 500 scorecards that are now in a mailbox attached to the back of the sign. The course was finally complete and it was time to have a grand opening. I called all the local newspapers and news stations. I also talked to the principal of the Middle school and asked if we could have a few teachers and students at the grand opening. The principal allowed all the 8th grade and about 10 teachers to attend the grand opening. I also had the superintendent of the school district attend the grand opening. We had approximately 100 people at the grand opening. After the course was officially open, we have had a few tournaments for the community to attend. It has been about 6 months since the grand opening and I just recently talked to the middle school principal. The principal said that the gym class is using the frisbee golf course on nice days, the cross country team is using the course as a running course, and the teachers have now started a group on monday's after school that meet and play frisbee golf. I now look back at everything I did and I'm still amazed at how much I got done. I now periodically will visit the course and do routine maintenance on the course. I have heard from many people in the community that they are glad there is a place to go and play frisbee golf.
