The Problem

Kids today, especially those in low income neighborhoods, don't learn enough about nutrition in school or at home to make good decisions about eating choices in today's confusing food environment. Our project aims to teach kids how the food pyramid works and how they can think about it every day to make sure they make the choices they need for strong, healthy bodies!

Plan of Action

We are teaming up with the American Medical Association to recruit support and volunteers. We have already contacted multiple elementary schools about visiting their after-school programs to present our activities. The majority of the schools have already replied and expressed great interest in having us. We plan to set up a few "stations" through which the kids can rotate to learn about the food pyramid. One station will have a game with six hoops held by volunteers, each representing a different section of the food pyramid. The students, divided into two teams, will toss fake stuffed "foods" into the category of hoop they belong in. Another station will have a coloring activity that asks the students to draw a dinner they could have that night to finish their "food pyramid" for the day based on what they had eaten earlier in the day. A third station will have a healthy snack. Since physical activity is now considered part of the food pyramid, we will end the activities with a relay race to get everyone's heart rate up!

Project Updates

We're en route to a great project! Our first of hopefully multiple events will occur on January 13th at a local public school. We are currently in the process of deciding exactly which activities will be best for each age group.
