Surfaid International is a non-profit organization that was created by Dr. Dave Jenkins in order to help the Mentawai people. The Mentawai people are dying from treatable and preventable diseases like measles, malaria, diarrhea, and tetanus. Aside from this, the Mentawai Islands were hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and the inhabitants are still feeling the effects of this disaster as well. The Surfaid organization distributes cost-effective solutions for the health problems of the Mentawai people and teaches them how to remain healthy on their own. For more information about Surfaid International please visit http://www.surfaidinternational.org/ I found this organization a couple of months ago and I really want to help this cause because the diseases that these people are dying from can be cured right now with inexpensive medications and simple items such as mosquito nets. I want to create a fundraiser and send the profit to this organization. I created a facebook group ( at this link http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9944399263) to see if there was an interest to help in my community and 43 people joined in less than 24 hours of the groups' creation saying they were interested in helping. The goal is to create a big beach event where we sell bracelets, have a skim contest, tie dye shirts, and maybe even a cardboard boat race. Although the ideas are currently preliminary-we need funding in order to get started. I am positive that with some grant money to help this fundraiser get started it will end in a great success.
