The Problem

With so many problems with obesity in young children I wanted to make a difference by teaching children about making healthy food choices. With the gardens the children not only learn about healthy eating but they also learn about planting the plants. The community I work with is composed of very low income families. It is predominantly a black american community. Many of the student popullation is obese or already struggling with adult deseases. Last year we had many workshops where parents also attended and learned about cooking healthier meals to their families.

Plan of Action

I want to continue using the gardens already at the school site to continue educating the children about the importance of eating healthy at an early age so they don't have to face adult deseases such as high blood pressure and heart desease, later on in life. In other words it is a preventive action that will continue to help them even after they grown. According to the surveys done at the school site both the parents and the students have learned from the gardens about helthy choices and eating more fruits and vegetables.
