Get Green Alleys Project

the problem:

The blighted alleys in the area where we've been cleaning, gardening, and art making have been notorious drug dealing locations. With the help of students and volunteers, we have transformed the alleys into beautiful plant and art environments. The homeless are an integral part of the alleys and many have been given recycled sketchbooks and are writing, drawing, and photographing their experiences. We have organized several community events that include performance, drawing and painting, music, bake sales, free plants, seeds, and compost. The alleys are not recognized as an important resource for the city. We need to make more people aware of our activities and to get the small businesses involved.

why it's important:

The alleys are city owned and were a garbage littered crime area. We have transformed the alleys into a more friendly and community valued walkway/garden that connects small businesses in the neighborhood. Degraded and blighted spaces are a drag on community spirit and are psychologically toxic. We have a long way to go but the alleys are becoming a positive experience for most in the community.

the plan of action:

We want to create a series of community potluck events in the alleys and to specifically invite the homeless, small businesses, students, artists, city officials, and people from the community to participate.

how you can get involved:

All volunteers are welcome to assist with watering and weeding and especially when we organize events, like the hoped for "Alley Potlucks."

The city will soon plant 3 Sabal Palm trees in our first (#1) transformed alley! We are grateful to the city for helping us with the palms and also 5 small Crape Myrtle trees.
