The Problem

The mission of Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) is to help urban youth make a difference in themselves and their communities through meaningful service opportunities and educational experiences. MHYC improves the greater-Denver area by putting Corpsmembers to work in urban neighborhoods, public parks, and open spaces.

Plan of Action

Currently, I serve as the Outreach Coordinator for Mile High Youth Corps. I am responsible for recruiting and hiring local and national young people for our crews, which are very diverse themselves. In 2009, MHYC expects to engage 110-120 young adults in opportunities that help the planet and provide pathways to a promising future. I will be responsible for hiring them all! Specifically, I plan to create a Youth Street Team to help with recruitment of their peers, particularly for the hard-to-reach YouthBuild target population. I hope to prepare and equip current YouthBuild Corpsmembers to approach their homeless/troubled peers on the streets, share their own success story, and encourage others to join the program. The 2007 stats for all of our crews include the following: 46,000 hours of community service logged 545 trees planted 14 miles of trail built and maintained 2,100 low-income residents served with energy/water assistance 31 GEDs earned Our statistics for 2008 with be even higher and we will continue to make a lasting impact in the Denver community as we employ more and more young people.
