The Problem

Girl Power volunteers with girls at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth. This home is an alternative to Foster care and houses children who have been severely neglected and abused and abandoned. The children, when they arrive at the home, have been with 10 foster care families on average. By the time they get to the home they have been through unimaginable obstacles. We work in a cottage setting within the home, which is set up like a community. The cottages are the gender separated homes the children live in. One of the problems Girl Power is trying to solve there is that there is a shortage of clothing that is generation friendly to the children. Because the majority of the donations are from estate sales or adult donations, many of the clothes don't fit or are outdated. We are not asking for expensive name brands, just age appropriate clothing for the girls. They already struggle with body image and clothing is the last thing they need to worry about.

Plan of Action

Girl Power plans on using the money from the grant to put on a clothing drive at our campus. We also want to donate small goodie bags at Christmas time for all the cottages. There are a lot of children and we are college students who simply could not afford to take that financially on. With the remainder of the money we plan to start a rainy day fund to further our project and help start new entities within the organization of Girl Power.
