The Problem
Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere with about 80% of its citizens living in conditions of extreme poverty, and the majority of children. These children are neglected by a society that has thrown them a way and a government that is doing very little. Having attended an all girls high school and college I wanted to do research about the girls in Honduras and assist them in using their voices to make educated decisions about their own lives.
Plan of Action
I created a curriculum that would encourage the teenage girls living in the orphanage to challenge the life that poverty has lined up for them. After creating my lesson plans I was provided a fellowship from my school to go to Honduras and teach the girls. Together we focused on increasing our knowledge about leadership, healthy living, self-esteem, success and civic engagement. Women are the future for any given society and I wanted to ensure that each girl would find her voice and become a decision-maker in their own lives, academically, economically and in life choices.
