The Problem
One of the leading causes of death in the United States is cancer. Unfortunately, we have not found a cure nor have we been able to stop it from spreading. This disease is life-threatening and painful, especially to a child. The children at the Chris Evert Children's Hospital are not only diagnosed with cancer, but they come from underpriveledged families that cannot afford the hospital stay. Further, their siblings are sometimes left behind due to the focus on the cancer patient. Although I haven't found the cure to cancer, it is my goal to help the children and their families suffering from cancer by alievating some of the mental pain.
Plan of Action
First, I called up the hospital and asked if I could be a volunteer. After training, I was put into action and I fell in love. Never before have I enjoyed volunteering this much. The smiles and hugs I received from the children were life-changing. However, I felt like I wasn't doing enough. I decided to call up entrepreneur Daniel Staton to see if I could get him to donate passes for the children to go to Build-A-Bear. Not only did he comply, but the staff at the store were warm, welcoming, and extremely helpful with the children. After feeling extremely accomplished, I decided to email Color-Me-Mine Workshop to coordinate an event with them. They received me with open arms and we held yet another successful event. Since then, I have contacted Sparez Bowling Alley and Gameworks!, both willing and eager to donate. I look forward to planning more events in the future.
