This last year, my senior year of high school, my friend and I did a community service project. There were many different organizations we could have worked with, but my friend and I really wanted to give back to our high school because of all our teachers had done for us throughout our four years in high school. We began by selling snacks during lunch and at the school track meets. Also, I personally went around to many different businesses in town to ask for donations for our teachers. After two months of really hard work and commitment, we had a huge success of a project. The total dollar amount we raised was about $500, but, including what the donations were worth, we ended up with about $1,000 worth of great school supplies. Some of these donations included (25) $5.00 gift certificates to the local Christian bookstore, (2) gift certificates to the Learning Tree, and an anonymous parent donated $100. After we had raised all the money we needed, we spent one whole weekend preparing twenty-five gift baskets for the high school teachers and making sure everyone received a fair amount of items and some of the items they desired. All of the items given were school supplies except for a few personal items, such as baby wipes for their newborns and a gift certificate for a free pie from Marie Callendars. Overall, the project was a huge success and the teachers really appreciated how we displayed our care for them, since it can truly be difficult as a high school teacher. The end of the project was a luncheon we put on for all 25 teachers (most of whom attended), which was where we presented each teacher with their gift baskets.
