The Problem
My mother, Karen Schlum, and I are trying to provide extra support to the homeless. I am striving to fight poverty and homelessness one person at a time. My mother and I have fundraised money to be donated to Niagara Falls Community Missions (a homeless shelter and feeding center). We have also collected gifts of personal hygiene items for the homeless. In 2008, 39.8 million people were living in poverty, which is the record high since 1997. This economic issue is a pressing issue that can be solved easily one step at a time.
Plan of Action
The organization that I have done most of my volunteer work is through my church, Bethesda Full Gospel Tabernacle Church of Tonawanda, NY. The projects that have been conducted are Tea Party Fundraiser, Christmas Party at Cornerstone Manor and Niagara Falls Community Mission, and Son Rays Bible Backyard Club. The Backyard Tea Party fundraiser 2008, 2009 was hosted in my backyard. This event included a tea party in which tickets were sold. The proceeds were donated to the Niagara Falls Community to provide food for the soup kitchen. It also included a basket auction to raise funds. The Christmas Party hosted by my church at Cornerstone Manor starts with collecting gifts in October. Then the first Sunday in December we go to Cornerstone and host a party. We provide entertainment, lunch, pictures and gifts for all residents. At Niagara Falls Community Mission we host a Christmas party. We again provided crafts, music, gifts and a meal to the residents. In the summer for the last three years, I have been involved in the Son Rays Bible Backyard Club. This ministry buses in children from Cornerstone Manor to Tonawanda every Wednesday during July for a summer day camp program. I have helped teach crafts and Bible stories there. The organization provides music, crafts, story time, games and snacks for these inner city children.
