The Problem
While we all love to play lacrosse, unfortunately, not every child will have the opportunity to play this great game. I am committed to leveling the playing field by spreading the love of lacrosse to children in my immediate area (Boca Raton, Florida) who could not otherwise afford to play lacrosse.
Plan of Action
The first step I took to create Giving Lax was to hold lacrosse equipment drives (new and used) to provide the children with the proper equipment. I held one equipment drive at the Paul Rabil Lacrosse Clinic and another one at my high school in Florida. I used my leaderhsip skills to inspire the high school student body to bring in their used equipment by speaking at our monthly community assembly and it was a great success. I collected many helmets, sticks, gloves, pads, and even cleats! In January, I will begin a 10 week program at the Youth Activity Center(YAC) in Boca Raton, Florida, an after school program for children ages 5-12 of low-income families. I will be holding weekly one-hour instructional clinics teaching the basic skills and drills of lacrosse. The program will culminate with each participant receiving a certificate and hopefully their first very own lacrosse stick. People from across the nation, most of whom I don't even know, have contacted me about how eager they are to support Giving Lax. The support I have received from the children at the Youth Activity Center as well as the support I have received across the nation, has been very meaningful and has transformed my life. My plan is to continue to focus not only on academics at school but on seeing the the children who look foward to seeing me and learning lacrosse each week.
