The Problem

Two things that have always bothered me are poverty and apathy. With this project I hope to "do something" about both. After visiting the Philippines countless times, I learned that if the kids living in the slums only received the education they deserved, they would have the chance to become whoever they want to be. The second issue, apathy, needs to be fought against because it's hard to solve problems if nobody is aware of them or worse, if nobody cares.

Plan of Action

I have kept in touch with Gawad Kalinga (GK), whose name means "to give care". GK inspires people all over the world "to give care" to those who need it. Its volunteers are called "GK Heroes" and they help fight against poverty by rebuilding the poorest communities in third world countries from scratch. I promised those kids at the village a preschool and I plan on keeping my promise. I am working with GK to host a "homecoming dance". The funds will go to building the preschool. If we teenagers are going to spend a ton of cash to have fun, we might as well be helping a good cause while we're doing so. I hope to raise awareness among young people, share my experiences, and inspire everyone attending the dance to become GK Heroes and "do something".
