Global Awareness and Peace Promoters Sierra Leone Education Project
the problem:
I am Farah Weheba, the proud president of the Global Awareness and Peace Promoters Club of East High School. Last year we raised $5,000 to fund the construction of a school in Sierra Leone. Naturally, we're not stopping there. This year we are focused on funding a teacher's salary for the school and funding the costs for the following school support package, totalling $1900 for these 5 items:
$50 to purchase classroom supplies
$100 to purchase textbooks
$250 to plant trees on school grounds
$500 to help support teacher salaries
$1,000 to support the building of teacher accommodations
We sell mocha shakes at school made with Arbor Day Foundation Fair Trade coffee, and assemble holiday-themed baskets with the help of over 25 local businesses for silent auctions for parents and staff at school. As of now, through our Christmas gift basket auction, we've raised $640. The school should be ready within the next six months.
We also sponsor a boy from Bangladesh and a girl from Egypt through Save the Children.
Finally, our goal is to raise $4,000 for Habitat for Humanity by March 2008 for the Youth Coalition Build to help fund a local Habitat Home. We also plan to help construct the home this summer.
