Global Youth: Helping Youth from Other Nations

the problem:

The project mostly focuses on the Salt Lake Valley in Utah where the diversity of refugees coming the state of Utah is the greatest. The refugees in the community come from over over 25 nations and 3 different continents. In the current situation many refugee caseworkers are over burdened and they often handle over 20 different refugee cases. This leads to many refugees loosing out on personal support and an individualized effort to help them. This often leads to many refugees "falling through the cracks." They often come to America for a better life but do not find one, often time these refugees are orphans or children who have been separated from their families. This is the central concern of the Global Youth Project, to help youth from around the world.

vital stats:

people impacted:

2,000

people involved:

30

why it's important:

The Global Youth project is designed to help these diverse groups, especially youth, integrate into society and to help make the transition to the United States easier by providing toys, books, and in general just support through friendship. One great advantage of the Hillcrest FBLA organization that is sponsoring this project is that our members extremely diverse. Our organizations members speak 8 different languages and feel that this diversity is a great contribution to our effort to help these youth from all around the world.

the plan of action:

From previous experience certain community organizations regard high school student projects with some skepticism because of the perceived, "unreliability." To overcome this problem we began building trust from the ground up. The first step was sticking to our deadlines and dates. When we say our used clothing collection is on a certain day, we show up on that certain day whether sleet, rain, or snow. This project has grown to include multiple municipalities and has become a trusted organization within the community.
