The Problem

City Year, a national youth service organization that provides tutoring, mentoring, and leadership opportunities to students off-track from high school graduation, is the lead agency for Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) in San Antonio, Texas. City Year will be leading twelve service projects on the west side of San Antonio as part of Global Youth Service Week. These projects will include preparing meals for the homeless, revitalizing parks, hosting a game event at the Boys and Girls Club, painting murals around the city, caring for abused animals, teaching a social justice topic at the children's shelter, engaging the elderly at nursing homes, raising books and providing a stand-up comedy show at children and family hospitals, constructing community gardens, removing invasive species and trash from community parks, and promoting environmental responsibility at the recycling center.

Plan of Action

The GYSD committee members in City Year San Antonio (CYSA) meet once or twice a week to discuss the plans for April 11-16th. The committee consists of four subcommittees: Recruitment, programming, media, and budget. Recruitment works on pulling in all different volunteers from San Antonio for the week of service in April. Programming sets up service jobs for 1,100 volunteers by connecting the City Year organization with different nonprofit organizations around the city. Media works on capturing the audiences attention so we can bring in more volunteers and support for GYSD. Lastly, budget is left with the job of getting over $5,000 donated to GYSD and works on getting materials donated towards the projects for the week of service.
