Go Green Rake-A-Thon

the problem:

Our Group, BHS Go Green, working with the Village to rake the yards of community members. Each year, the Village gets rid of lawn debris, leaves and branches, but we use so many bags and it's a hassle for some of our elderly community members.

why it's important:

BHS Go Green is promoting a Rake-A-Thon which coincides with the Village Brush and Leaf removal week. We are volunteering our time and energy to rake the lawns of any community member who signs up for this event. Instead of using bags, we are going to rake the leaves to the edge of the yard (by the curb), so when the Village truck come along, they can simply suck the leaves up and remove them from the yard.

the plan of action:

BHS Go Green has 40+ student members who have organized themselves into raking teams. We are competing with each other to see which group can rake the most yards in one weekend. We have advertised the Rake-A-Thon in the paper and on the school website and are currently taking names and addresses of people who want us to rake their lawns. We hope to rake the lawns of half of the people in town (about 150 houses) and are working for a small donation to our club. We have weekly meetings to make sure we are organized and ready for however many houses we end up working on the weekend of Novemeber 8 and 9. The Village knows what we are doing and is ready for leaf and lawn debris removal for the following week.

how you can get involved:

Starting your own Rake-A-Thon to help out community members is a great idea and we hope to have a lot of fun. If you're in the area, we would love any additional volunteers!
