The Problem

Using reusable bags provides many benefits to the individual and the environment. As more and more plastic bags are consumed on a daily basis, more and more plastic must be produced because, at most, only 3% of plastic bags are recycled. The production of plastic, in and of itself, emits toxic chemicals into the atmosphere. Plastic bags also use oil in their production. Obviously, the more plastic bags we produce (to support our growing use of them), the more we pollute the atmosphere and the more oil we consume. Plastic also takes over 1,000 years to decompose and release toxic chemicals into the soil during decomposition. They also pollute the oceans and countryside, killing thousands of animals every year.

Plan of Action

In order to promote reusable bags in our community, BHS Go Green is working with the Village of Benton who have kindly donated us 1,000 reusable bags which have been personalized with a Benton Logo. Our club members will be distributing one or two bags to each household in Benton with information on what they can do to help with plastic bag waste. We hope that if given the initial bags, some people will use them and buy their own to reduce the carbon footprint in our town.
