The Problem

We are students from the Residential College at Goddard Hall of New York University, trying to set a precedent by being the first group of students to assemble independently from a dormitory and attend an alternative spring break project. This year we plan to travel to New Orleans, to reach out from our city and rebuild another. Our Goal is to rebuild New Orleans with the environment in mind - to provide a cleaner, safer environment for the culture of New Orleans to flourish. We will specifically be working in the Ninth Ward, both reconstructing homes and education residents about ways make their lives more environmentally sustainable.

Plan of Action

Within our Residential College, students work hand in hand on a daily basis with faculty members to incorporate education into our living experience. One of these faculty members decided to try and assemble what had always been an active group of students to do something great, and eagerly, more than 20 immediately signed up. We decided to work with Historic Green because the organization stands for two of Goddard's greatest principles - environmental sustainability and service to our fellow man. Since making the commitment to travel to New Orleans, we have worked many hours a week to try to obtain the funds necessary to safely arrive and stay at our destination. We have held fundraising events and asked for help from the community, while making such events opportunities to educate others about our mission. We hold weekly meetings to educate ourselves as well, about the history and culture that we are attempting to preserve, as well as the impact that Katrina has had on New Orleans. It has been an experience that none of us will forget.
