The Problem

The Gopher Tortoise population is rapidly declining due to urbanization, deforestation, and a rapidly spreading disease called Upper Respiratory Tract Disease. Gopher Tortoises are currently listed as a Threatened species in Florida. This project hopes to help save the Gopher Tortoise population while simultaneously creating an increased awareness about this and other conservation efforts that need support in our world.

Plan of Action

We began by garnering the support of city and school officials. We then conducted a series of experiments in Sandy Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary to determine the number of tortoises living there and the number that could be accepted there. This process involved the use of transect lines and mobile GPS tracking devices. We then began work on the preserve, presentations, grants, lesson plans, and collaborative efforts discussed above.
