The Problem
We are looking to find 1 or more volunteers with art experience to help run an art project at our DC school's carnival. We want to create something with the students that we could hang inside of our school. We would like the piece to reflect our "culture of achievement". The following is a description of our organization and its goals.
To get involved, please email Bonnie at brogers@phillyscholars.org.
Scholar Academies is a new non-profit school support organization whose leaders successfully turned around Young Scholars Charter School in Philadelphia. Scholar Academies exists to close the achievement gap and to contribute to national efforts to eradicate educational inequity. Our success at YSCS is based on hard work, an effective whole school model, highly competent staff, and the unwavering belief that all students regardless of personal circumstance can achieve academically.
Our mission is to work in urban areas and serve at-risk students in order to prepare them for success in rigorous high schools and colleges. At Young Scholars over 80% of our students qualify for federal free/reduced lunch. Yet, 80% of our 8th graders achieved "Advanced" or "Proficient" on the state ELA test. We now hope to bring our success to turnaround Young Scholars schools in both Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
Through different initiatives, Scholar Academies has been partnered with two formerly failing schools, Frederick Douglass Elementary in Philadelphia and Stanton Elementary in Washington, D.C. The team is proud to announce that Young Scholars Frederick Douglass Charter School and D.C. Scholars: Stanton Elementary will open for the 2010-2011 school year.
Every Scholar Academy provides traditionally underserved inner-city students with a meaningful, high-quality educational experience allowing them to:
1) achieve at the same level as their suburban student counterparts
2) attend and succeed in college
3) become lifelong learners and tomorrow’s leaders.
Scholar Academies seeks to broaden our impact by serving as many students as possible and working with other like-minded organizations.
