The Problem

Greek houses at UNC currently generate a lot of food waste because of they provide meals for their members. However, Pi Kappa Phi fraternity sees the value in composting this waste so it can be used by student driven community gardens in the area. Additionally we are currently paying a significant monthly amount in order to have our trash taken away due to regulations that prevent us from using a dumpster. By composting our waste we can reduce our carbon footprint, save valuable space in the Orange County landfill, save money for ourselves, educate university students about how to compost, and finally foster more cooperation between the Greek community and other groups on campus by providing composting to student run gardens.

Plan of Action

I have already met with Amy Brooks of Brooks Contracting (a large scale composting company) to discuss the cost of having composting picked up, and if we split the costs with two other houses it will be $110 per month per house. Brooks would provide the composting bins for outside and pick them up on a weekly basis. We need to provide the indoor compost bin for the kitchen, and pay for this compost pick up. Once we begin composting I am hopeful the alumni council will step up and help us continue to pay Brooks Contracting, but we need a starting fund to begin the project, and we simply don't have that right now.
