The Problem

Our community is a lower income community in Nashville, Tennessee. Nearly one out of three kids in the community is overweight. This is because of a lack of nutritious food and a lack of education about healthy eating. Our school is bordered by Sonic and Krystal and lacks grocery stores with fresh produce. To change these horrible statistics, we need to change the way people think about food.

Plan of Action

Our garden seeks to educate the members of the community about healthy eating and also to provide them with healthy fruits and vegetables. In exchange for coming to volunteer in the garden and learning about gardening, community members could take home not only fresh produce, but also the knowledge of how to grow their own food. Not only will we teach them to grown their own food, but also how to cook their own food from scratch. By making meals together, they will experience how delicious local food can be. They will also receive recipe cards so they can take those home and spread their healthy eating habits to others in the community.
