The Problem
Chapel Hill High School is not the most eco-friendly place in town. It is located in an amazingly green town, but I know that we are not properly representing the town we live in. Our school's attitude towards sustainability is, recycling is good. We seem to only practice that one concept. That's a great start, but when I see all the styrofoam trays used, sinks being left on in the bathroom, no post-consumer paper, it knocks me on my side. Our school has the potential to improve and that's where Green Tiger Campaign began.
Why It's Important
The Green Tiger Campaign (named after our mascot) is a campaign driven by students (without fossil fuels, of course). Over the next few years we are here, we will do several projects to educate other students/faculty about sustainability and put those lessons into action.
Through collaborative effort between our campaign and staff, we are changing out old policies and replacing them with ones that are better for students, teachers and the earth!
The Plan Of Action
Green Tiger Campaign advertised a need for students who care about earth in the school. Within a month, we have about fifteen members who are all willing to do projects to benefit our earth. As of now, our main project is to prepare our old school greenhouse for the spring, when we will use it for a community garden. We are changing faculty's ideas about how they use resources and students are beginning to get excited about these events and want to get involved.
How Can Others Get Involved?
If you attend Chapel Hill High school, please rally support for the Green Tiger Campaign. If not, try creating your own school campaign and find its specific problems when it comes to sustainability. Then you can fix it!

Final Grant Update

Kristen PowersNumber of people in the organization: 25
Number of people impacted: 1400
Describe the impact the grant had: We were able to not concentrate on fundraising while we initially started the club. We were also able to use the money to create a community garden by renovating the greenhouse. This greenhouse has not been used in years for produce and it was very exciting to see this come alive.
Project highlights: 1) Formation of the GreenTiger Campaign at Chapel Hill High 2) Creation of the CHHS Community Garden 3) Partnership with Student Government for future projects
How did the project unfold and develop? Our project started off by just a few members and began to grow over several months. We started off the project by creating a community garden with the help of the grant. We formulated many ideas that would help increase our sustainability, but had higher financial costs than we had finances. However, we have better planning to help this develop. Our community was impacted by an amazing garden. We have many volunteers working to sustain the organic vegetables growing within. It has been a great way for students to meet and get service hours.
