The Problem

My school has an underutilized courtyard and a lack of places for students to enjoy and learn about the environment. My school also has an excess of food waste in the kitchens and cafeteria.

Plan of Action

Right after our spring break, our school's Art Honor Society agreed to paint a mural on a big empty wall in our courtyard. I plan to put in an herb garden, butterfly garden and bird garden soon, as well some compost bins. Eventually I also hope to add picnic tables and benches for students to sit on. I wish to add grass to the areas that are just dirt at present, and put up fences and an arbor to make it feel like a real garden. I want to plant vegetables in the beds I was able to convince a local boy scout troop to install and plant a circular herb garden behind them. I intend to also plant a butterfly and bird garden in the area to bring more wildlife into the school environment and create a haven for migrating and domestic species as well as for the overworked and stressed student population. I also hope to someday incorporate my garden produce into the school's cafeteria food, to bring better food to the students. Plus I intend to start a composting program to decrease our school's waste and increase our garden output. Additionally, I hope to give science teachers a place to teach in a hands-on fashion about the environment and the need for conservation.
