The Problem

Many community members in need are unable to reap the benefits of organic produce thanks to the price in comparison to cheaper foods, such as non-perishable items or fast food. Accordingly, obesity rates are high in this demographic. Even wealthier community members do not focus on purchasing locally grown organic produce due to simple lack of knowledge. The purpose of The Green Grub Project is to fix both of these problems.

Plan of Action

Since its beginning in April 2011, The Green Grub Project has converted an abandoned elementary school courtyard into a beautiful vegetable garden. This garden has produced two harvests of lettuce, swiss chard, parsley and radishes, which have been donated to local food distribution programs. These harvests have been extremely popular with food pantry regulars, who have begun requesting more fresh produce from these programs. Furthermore, many of the student volunteers have experienced a greater appreciation for organic agriculture after working on the project.
