Green Life for Greek Life at Virginia Tech: Leave a Legacy and a Smaller Footprint

the problem:

Currently, as a whole, the Greek community does not practice very sustainable habits for reasons ranging from apathy, lack of education, to the lack of money. However, we believe it does not have to be this way. We want to examine how best fraternities and sororities can incorporate more sustainable practices into their everyday operation. Some members of the Greek community have a less than pressing interest in being environmentally friendly. The problems, beyond potential logistics issues, involve transforming the overall attitudes of brothers and sisters. This is easier said than done. We will almost certainly meet resistance and skepticism. The goal is to plant the seeds of a permanent shift in attitudes and make a lasting impact upon Greek life at Virginia Tech.

why it's important:

Sustainability is important to us because it is something greater than ourselves and has an impact on everyone and everything. A sustainable future is the only way to ensure prosperity. Our goal of this project to bring awareness to the importance of this issue and show that small changes along with a positive attitude can make a significant difference.

the plan of action:

We are currently in correspondence with people who have started similar programs at Emory and Cornell Universities. Their success has been a great source of continued inspiration. With their help we are positive we will meet with success in our endeavor. We plan to hold a week long event during earth week in the spring. Each day will focus on different sustainability issues through presentations, videos, functions, and fundraising. The week will be teaching and learning opportunity to create awareness and promote behavioral changes for the better of our environment.
