The Problem
The purpose of the Greenwill club has been to solve the problem of carelessness and disunity in society. So many people in my community depend on the soup kitchen for their meals and struggle just to get by on a day to day basis. Then when these people have children, the kids are born into poverty, and hardly stand a chance simply because of the circumstances they were born into. I see way to many small children at the soup kitchen, shoveling as much food as they can into their small bodies because they know how precious food truly is. Environmentally, so many people neglect to care for their environment or even to at least respect it--we see garbage littered around the beach and nature parks of out community every day. Its not that these people are evil, it is just that they are either uninformed or careless or both.
Plan of Action
First, I established Greenwill as an official school club. During Club Rush, over seventy students signed up to participate. We then created a Facebook group and invited all those students to the group, and sent out messages and posts alerting all members of the events and encouraging them to bring friends and family. These members, though they did not show up to every single event, did all show up to atleast one event during the year. We held monthly meetings in a classroom to plan events and toy/canned food drives. We offered every member a ride to the soup kitchen if they wished to participate (atleast ten members showed up to each meal). We also informed all members of big events sponsored by local organizations, and encouraged them to go either with the club as a large group or separately with their own friends and families.
My plan, from the very beginning, has been to recruit and affect as many people as possible to simply spend some amount of time reaching out to their community. My goal is to not only bring social and environmental awareness to my community, but also to inspire fellow students and hopefully adults and children we meet along the way to just take some time and really see what an impact a beach clean-up or a soup kitchen or a toy drive for poor children can have on so many lives. So far, I have been extremely successful. The core club is not large, but at each event many new people show up with our club to help out, and come back to help again whenever they have time. Although it is not an intensive movement, it is effective in spreading the ideology that aiding the community is not a chore, its a gift.
In addition to all this, I have been given a position on the American Red Cross Board of Directors, which runs the American Red Cross at my local chapter in West Palm Beach. This ties into my goal to unite humanity--impartiality is one of the key principles of the American Red Cross. I also volunteer at my local art museum to aid young students in arts and crafts and to walk them through museum tours. These students typically come from low grade schools in areas of high poverty.
