Since October, a club at my school, Invisible Children United, of which I am an officer, has been working to raise money to aide the crisis in Uganda. My primary responsibility in the club has been to plan, organize, and implement our many fundraising events. For twenty years, a civil war has torn Northern Uganda apart, resulting in 1.5 million people displaced into camps, and a student to teacher ratio of 300 to 1, and the endless persecution of the Acholi people. The rebel army fighting in Northern Uganda has also been kidnapping children as young as 8 and forcing them to fight and kill their former neighbors. In October my school was paired with a secondary school in Uganda. We are currently raising funds to provide a quality education to the 881 students enrolled in this small school. We raised $3,000 in two weeks in the clubs first big fundraising push. We paralleled the invisible children to a play I was directing about the children of the holocaust, and turned the performance into an awareness/fund raising event. I advertised the event for a week on our school’s televised morning announcements by talking to the students briefly about the cause, what we were doing to change it, and the many ways they could help. Also that week, members of the club and I collected spare change at lunch from the students. The efforts of that week raised $2,450. The following weekend we held a screening at my church involving the community’s youth, where we were able to bring the cause to about 45 new people, and in the process raise $530.
Following these first two events, we are about to begin our second phase of fundraising that will last from early December to late January. I have planned a series of screenings of the Invisible Children movie at local churches and we will be taking donations at each screening, hopefully achieving an equal success to our first church screening. We will continue this after the Christmas holiday. On January 25th we have reserved a 1250 seat auditorium where we have arranged for local bands to play and a screening of the film in an effort to raise more money. Our goal is to have raised $10,000 by February 1.
