In the United States, school curricula rarely address issues of public service or social justice. The GUTS Summit seeks to inspire youth, ages 13-19, to act as young leaders effecting social change in their communities.

why it's important:
GUTS is about increasing teen volunteerism and leadership. The GUTS Summit was founded in 2006, when 200 high school students learned about leadership, entrepreneurship, and issues from politics to domestic violence. In August 2008, a Do Something Plum Grant supported the 2nd GUTS Summit. The 3rd GUTS Summit was held on May 15, 2010 and inspired dozens of local youth to community action.
the plan of action:
This biennial youth summit brings together local leaders such as the Mayor of Shreveport, professionals with careers in public service, young people who have initiated their own service projects, and non-profit organizations. In a day-long event held at Centenary College of Louisiana, students engage in insightful discourse on issues of social justice and privilege, diversity and race, and opportunities to engage in public service.
