The Problem

The communities surrounding Graniteville in Aiken County, SC are home to what are known as Brownfield sites due to the closure of Avondale Mills after a train derailment and chlorine spill in 2005. These sites have been abandoned and cause many safety issues for the communities. The biggest concern among residents was the affect these sites had aesthetically. With the help of students from Augusta Christian Schools, we were able to spend 2 days doing cleanup in common areas in the community to make a historic landmark something to marvel at once again.

Plan of Action

Working with strategic partners, we are trying to devise a master plan for redevelopment with an emphasis on the input from young people who will be most affected by the changes that are to come. We are currently working with the South Carolina Chapter of the Urban Land Institute.
