The Problem

A year back, a series of earthquakes devastated the poor nation of Haiti. After hearing of the death toll and seeing the images on the television, I believed in my heart that students my age could do something to help. Knowing that the students in my city had the capacity to raise monetary funds for the relief effort, I began the HAITI Action Now bracelet campaign.

Plan of Action

First, my campaign needed a way to raise money for those devastated by the earthquakes. What seemed like a reasonable way to do this was by giving away bracelets for donations of a dollar or more. I then put up my personal funds to order 3,300 black silicon bracelets with the Haitian motto “L’union fait la force” and its translation, “Strength in Unity,” imprinted on them. By using media sources like the newspaper and Facebook, this bracelet campaign was able to encompass most of my city's area high schools and church groups, as well as schools almost 1000 miles away. After many labor intensive hours designing the bracelets, fliers, and a Facebook group, making phone calls, and meeting with various schools, clubs, and club organizers, the campaign raised over five thousand, five hundred dollars in profits. This money was eventually sourced to the American Red Cross, where it transformed into water, food, and metal supplies for the Haitians.
