The Problem

Hampton is a diverse community, with many low-income families. There are not many affordable opportunities for local teens to do what it is they find most interesting in their leisure time. Some local teens struggle to graduate on time, hindered by the traditional education system. Many teens are also apathetic when it comes to community involvement.

Plan of Action

As a sophomore I joined the Hampton Teen Center Steering Committee, a joint team of youth and adult community stakeholders which would guide the Teen Center's development, following a $3 Million City investment in a closing Health and Fitness Center. In this role I offered a young person's input on all aspects the center's design, renovations, the partnership with the Performance Learning Center, and operating policies. I also chaired a Youth Commission sub-committee as they researched the best transportation options to make the Teen Center accessible to Hampton's youth.
