The Problem
I believe it is important to encourage children to dream big and teach them how to obtain that dream.Children have created the mindset that with the economic downfall their dreams are not realistic. We need them to understand that they are the ones who make their own dreams a reality.
Plan of Action
I decided to start the program Hands Down 4 Success. Its a program that teaches students what a goal is, how to set a goal, and the steps that are needed to obtain their goals. We start the program by having high school students go and talk to elementary classes on how they reached their own personal dreams and goals. The high school student then proceeds to show the students how to set goals and reach them by starting a "class goal." The class chooses what the goal is and then they break down the steps they are going to take to reach that goal. Then to remind them of their class goal we make "Reminder Handprints." They can take these home and show them to their families and explain their goals. Then the high school student reports back to the class room every 2 weeks asking how the goal is going and what steps they are taking to reach it.
I never realized how this program could influence our students here in Vernal Utah. I recieved an email from one the classroom teachers explaining to me that a young girl, who had wanted to be the 1st woman president, had told him the week before that she wasn't going to college because there was no money for her. This had saddened him very much. The next week I was able to speak to her class and she came and told her teacher that she had set up the steps to be able to go to college and was working on her plans to becoming the 1st woman president.
That is just one of the many stories I have been told. They each mean so much to me. I have learned so much about how just one act of kindness can change a childs future.
