The Problem
I established the Healing Hearts committee in my local high school, G. Holmes Braddock Sr. High, during 11th grade. This community service project aims to benefit local healthcare organizations.
As Chief Executive Officer of Braddock’s Future Business Leader’s of America organizations (FBLA), I made Healing Hearts the local community service for the 2011-2012 school year, and will do the same for the upcoming year. The committee is run by me, however without the geniality of local FBLA members, my project wouldn’t be nearly as successful as it is today.
Throughout FBLA, I coordinated a donation drive to benefit the Miami Ronald McDonald House Charity, as well as Camillus House Health Concern. The donation drive was held from September 2011 through December 2011. In the Ronald McDonald House Charity donation drive I collected canned goods, household Goods, and cleaning products. Over and above, in the Camillus House Health Concern drive I collected men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes, and belts, in addition to women’s purse and men’s wallets. In total, I collected over 1,500 items for both charities. Corresponding donations were given to each stated charity in mid-December.
Furthermore, I also completed the required paperwork to attend numerous field trips that will benefit healthcare organizations. For instance, on October 23, 2011 my chapter’s FBLA attended the Buddy Walk for Down syndrome, where we donated $150.00 to the Down Syndrome Association. Additionally, on November 19, 2011 my chapter attended the St. Jude Children’s Hospital “Give Thanks” Walk, where we donated $125.00 to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Moreover, through Healing Hearts I participated in the Ronald McDonald Adopt-a-Meal Program in December, along with three volunteers and my FBLA lead adviser. After an exhausting day at the hospital or clinic, a warm, homemade meal always serves as a wonderful greeting. As a team, we all pitched in to make some flavorsome salad, spaghetti, and tasty cookies for desert. As volunteers, we brought all the cooking ingredients, disposable cups, plates, and utensils, and cooked for 25-30 people.
Plan of Action
My plan of action is to carry on Healing Hearts until my senior year of high school, and then continue it in college as well. The steps I have taken to create my project include taking initiative, completing required paperwork, organizing a donation drive to over 3,500 students, and coordinating various field trips. I have significantly impacted the inhabitants of the Miami Ronald McDonald House and Camillus House Health Concern with the generous donations from myself, along with the donations of all Healing Hearts volunteers.
