The Problem

Disproportionate access to appropriate and proper health care. People in poor and rural areas tend to receive a lower quality of health care and that needs to be changed. We have the tools to do so much to inexpensively prevent simple diseases and that needs to be addressed. I worked in Costa Rica on this mission and also volunteer where I live in Austin, TX to provide aid in health care for people who live below the poverty line.

Plan of Action

I am starting medical school this fall where I am enrolled at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in the Leadership in Medicine for the Vulnerable and Underserved program. There I will take additional courses to the MD program to learn about working with the populations. We will travel to Central America and to rural areas of Michigan to work with underserved populations. During my summer breaks, I plan to travel back to Costa Rica and work in a government clinic or with the organization Mision Consuelo to provide health care to the extremely poor citizens of Costa Rica. This is the organization that I volunteered for last summer on this project.
