The Problem
H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths, Inc. was formed for the charitable and educational purposes of relieving the poor, distressed and underprivileged; combating community deterioration and juvenile delinquency; and advancing education by improving the quality of education, health care and life-skills training offered to underserved adolescents and young adults. In furtherance of this purpose, H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths will collaborate with non-profit organizations which have after-school and weekend programs to provide workshops in the areas of physical health, mental health and life-skills.
Why It's Important
H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths will focus in and around the New York metropolitan area, with the hope to eventually branch out regionally, nationally and internationally. According to the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development's 2008 Annual Report http://www.nyc.gov/html/dycd/downloads/pdf/2008_annual_report.pdf, while 33% of the city's overall youth budget is earmarked for after school and extra-curricular activities, and great strides have been made to assist families in these areas, there is still a great deal of work left to do - and this work can be done by non-profits such as H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths. Additionally, while rates for certain health care issues are on the decline among youths, for teens 15-19, rates of pregnancy remain at 93.2 per 1,000 in New York City, as opposed to 72.2 Nationally(http://www.getthefactsny.org/policymakers/documents/NYC-NEWYORK.pdf).Rates of smoking remain high (http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/csi/noid-youth.pdf). In 2005, an estimated 93,000 of the 280,000 public high school students in New York City used alcohol (http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/survey/survey-2007subsAbuse.pdf).
The Plan Of Action
Programming
Etiquette Workshops:
In the etiquette workshops, students will learn proper table and social etiquette and role play different aspects of professional life, including the interview process. Tape recorders will be used so that the students can listen to and learn from their performance of the role playing exercises.
Mental Health Workshops:
The mental health workshops will provide an overview of “health choices” for students from a mental health perspective. Students will role play and watch films that portray mental health issues from an adolescent’s point of view.
SAT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT Preparatory Workshops:
Students will be able to engage is intensive preparatory workshops in furtherance of these college and graduate school entrance exams. Diagnostic tests will be given and special tutoring classes will be available to students as warranted.
Healthcare Literacy and Education Workshops:
In the healthcare workshops, the students will learn about nutrition, healthy living and “healthy” healthcare choices.
Legal Rights Workshops:
Students in the legal rights workshops will learn about legal rights of adolescents, interactions with law enforcement, and their rights in the community. Role playing and multimedia (film, television, and computers) will be utilized to foster critical thinking and awareness.
Career Development Workshops:
At the career development workshops, the students will learn about different career paths and have access to computers to research and apply to internships and jobs.
Some of the workshops will involve field trips. For example, students in the etiquette workshops will go to a restaurant and practice their table etiquette skills. The workshops will be provided to underserved ages late teens-early 20s in low-income areas of New York and New Jersey. The students will participate in at least one workshop each week. There will be 10-15 students in each workshop. The program will have around 45 students the first year and over 100 students in the years after.
H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths programs benefit poor, distressed and underprivileged youth because the programs encourage the overall growth of the participants by focusing on the areas of health and life-skills. H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths programs benefit collaborating non-profits because H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths will provide health and life-skills workshops currently lacking form many after-school programs, which will in turn improve the quality of the after-school programs and enhance the appeal and reputation of these programs.
Workshop Programming - Innovation through multimedia, computer gaming, film, outreach, literacy and support
As stated above, the workshop programs of the organization will encompass intensive life-skill, wellness, mental and physical "healthiness" outreach and literacy training for students and young adults, as well as a career outreach workshop program. Leaders in the areas of medicine, social services, business and education will be taped to facilitate the workshops and be available to students for smaller group meetings and advice giving. A complete list of workshops and workshop leaders is available.
Through intensive workshops using innovative educational tool such as multimedia, computer gaming film, interactive discussion and field trips, students will be able to discuss healthcare and educational issues of concern and work with experienced professionals to lessen risk factors for unsafe behavior that could lead to detrimental consequences.
