The Problem
Beaches are extremely polluted places, so I have been working to clean our local beaches almost every week. I also hosted the International Coastal Cleanup for our local beaches and several community cleanups. We remove all kinds of garbage like plastics, cigarette butts, bottle caps and other very detrimental items like rope, 6 pack rings, oil containers. These items endanger our wildlife and every piece of garbage disposed of properly may save animals, birds or fish from dangerous entanglement or perhaps indirectly improve our health.
Why It's Important
I also hosted the International Coastal Cleanup for our local beaches and several community cleanups. These items endanger our wildlife and every piece of garbage disposed of properly may save animals, birds or fish from dangerous entanglement or perhaps indirectly improve our health.
The Plan Of Action
We have made a tremendous impact on cleaning our beaches and the most important thing is heightened awareness from our community. We're now working on a joint campaign with 2 non-profits and our town to further awareness and prevention.
How Can Others Get Involved?
Think about hosting and organizing your own cleanup, whether it be near water or not. Eventually, a lot of the garbage with storm water runoff ends up in our rivers and waterways. If you'd like more information on how to start my project in YOUR area, please leave me a comment!
Project Updates
06/17/09
Update: 7/30/08-After hosting 22 of my own beach clean-ups and 3 sponsored by my community, I have picked up 901 pounds of garbage from local beaches. By cleaning up Maine beaches, I believe I can help not only wildlife in the area, but the health and welfare of beach goers as well. In order to further promote my efforts, the Plum grant money helped fund educational programs that will help the youth in my area become better stewards of the oceans.

Great photos! That's great that you've had so many people out helping. You truly are making a difference! Thank you for your inspiration!
I'm so glad you are working to clean up our beaches. It's great that you are helping the environment, and equally awesome that you are making people more concious about their impact on it. I hope things continue to go well.
