The Problem

Healthy Images-Imagenes Saludables is a program designed to combat childhood obesity, a problem that is affecting many within our nation. The purpose of this program is to help youth, particularly low-income, inner-city youth obtain healthy lifestyles and ultimately reduce and prevent childhood obesity, while also keeping them engaged and off crime infested streets within the city of Reading, PA. The program will provide youth with useful information to include health and nutrition, drug, alcohol, and tobacco use prevention, and sports and physical fitness training. This will be an effort to promote the overall achievement of each individual child and ultimately, reduce childhood obesity.

Plan of Action

The program will offer free sessions to youth within the ages of 12-16, and younger, if necessary. These sessions will provide information on various topics such as food and nutrition, obesity and its risks, becoming physically fit, how to measure food and read nutrition labels. It will teach the youth how to measure body fat and how to reduce it. A certified fitness trainer will also design easy to follow fitness programs for each individual participant. In addition, the sessions will cover the effects of alcohol use and how other drug consumption and how it affects our bodies and health, and how to measure body fat and how it can be reduced. Throughout eight (8) weeks a certified physical fitness trainer will design a fitness program for each child and will be implementing this individually tailored program to be able to measure program outcomes. Healthy Images-Imagenes Saludables will run as an afterschool program free of charge for a 2 hour span to include an information session, a snack, and physical fitness training. Program start date is targeted for mid October 2009. Healthy Images-Imagenes Saludables will run in eight (8) week cycles for a group of 10 to 12 kids at a time for the duration of the school year. A summer program is also in its development stages.
